Zurich appoints chief administrative officer

Zurich Financial Services Group has announced the appointment of Christian Orator to the position of chief administrative officer.

Orator will assume a seat on the Group Executive Committee when he takes up his new post, his appointment being effective from 1 September of this year.

Missouri Voters Say “No” To Mandatory Health Care

Missouri voters hit the polls to vote on Proposition C. They were the first in the country to speak their minds with ballots on whether health care should be mandatory. And voters said loud and clear, no. About 71 percent of Missouri voters supported Proposition C, which prohibits the government requiring citizens to carry health insurance or from penalizing anyone who doesn’t.

But what the vote actually accomplishes is up for debate. Federal law always trumps state law, but some say it may change the outcome of the upcoming November elections. CNO posts profit in the second quarter, but shows losses in insurance sector

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that CNO Financial Group Inc.’s profit in the second quarter has grown 20 percent, exceeding the expectations of market analysts.

Formally known as Conseco, the company provides life insurance among other services to middle-and-low income households across the United States.

CNO posted a profit of $33.1 million from $27.6 million last year at this time. However, the Journal notes that insurance policy income dropped 16 percent. The risk-based capital ratio, an indicator of the company’s financial health, decreased 1 percentage point, to 318 percent.

Home insurance companies pledge to raise money, help Gulf disaster victims

In light of the Gulf oil spill disaster, HomeInsurance.com has announced that they will be donating $5 to the National Wildlife Foundation’s recovery efforts every time a new customer takes out a home insurance policy through the month of August.

This is coming after Safeco, Foremost and Progressive made the decision to pitch in to help with the cleanup in the Gulf.

“Over the past few years HomeInsurance.com been able to support some wonderful causes,” said Jana Bell, Co-Chief Executive Officer at HomeInsurance.com. “Now we will be making a donation to help the wildlife of the Gulf region which feels like our backyard from our coastal city in North Carolina.”

Investigators Catch Auto Insurance Fraud Ring

Auto insurance companies paid out more than $1 million in claims for fake car accidents, according to investigators. The extensive scheme included dozens of people and this week the man police say was at the head of the scam was sentenced to four to ten years in state prison in Pennsylvania. Forty-four-year-old Wallace Morris Sr, also known as “Popsicle” and “Pops” also faces federal charges, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Authorities say Morris pleaded guilty to his involvement in 44 fake car accidents in order to collect insurance money. The judge also ordered Morris to repay about $440,000 to 17 different insurance companies that Morris scammed. The ins
