Flood home insurance program granted extension by House
July 18th, 2010 | by Maria Gonzalez |Some consumers may have to get particular home insurance depending upon the area in which they live.
Included in that scope is flood insurance, which helps cover against damages not protected against by a standard policy. Policies are administered through the National Flood Insurance Program, which is under the watch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
For some time now, Congress has passed piecemeal extensions to the NFIP, while still allowing for lapses in the program. As a result, consumers who have tried to buy a home or renew their flood coverage have, at times, had to wait to do so.
Many lenders may require a buyer to get this type of home insurance before granting a mortgage if the property is located in an area that could face flooding.
However, the House recently passed a five-year extension to the NFIP, which should help people who are trying to find the requisite home insurance for their properties. The measure now moves on to the Senate for a vote.
“Reauthorizing and improving the flood insurance program helps homeowners, businesses and communities throughout the country,” Representative Maxine Waters, who introduced the five-year extension, said.
